The Centennial Celebration

On Saturday, June 16, 2018, Manitoba’s Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, in conjunction with the Manitoba Division of The Navy League of Canada, celebrated their 100th year of serving the youth of Canada. This day-long celebration started in the morning with the Freedom of the City Ceremony at Winnipeg City Hall. In the afternoon, Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and Navy League Cadets, from all of Manitoba’s Corps, marched down Broadway to the Manitoba Legislature grounds where they participated in a Centennial Celebration Ceremony. In the evening a reception was held at the Fort Garry Hotel for the dignitaries; while Alumni of the Sea Cadet program met at the Osborne Legion to reminisce. At the same time, the Sea Cadets held a formal Mess Dinner at HMCS Chippawa.

The day’s events were organized by Mrs. Cecile Howells, Mr. Brian Hawkeye, Mr. Phillip Bingham, the members of the eight Branches and Executive of The Navy League of Canada - Manitoba Division, the officers of the seven Manitoba Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps, the officers of three Manitoba Navy League Cadet Corps and representatives from the Regional Cadet Support Unit (Northwest).

Freedom of the City Ceremony - Winnipeg City Hall

The Freedom of the City Ceremony is a centuries old tradition in which a municipality bestows upon a military unit the freedom to parade in the municipality’s streets (i.e. the Freedom of the City). On the morning of Saturday, June 16, 2018, His Worship, Mayor Brian Bowman, on behalf of the City of Winnipeg, bestowed upon the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets of Winnipeg the Freedom of the City. Accepting on behalf of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets of Winnipeg was Lt(N) Kevin Daeninck. As a thank you, the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets presented Mayor Bowman with a Ceremonial Paddle. The paddle was presented by its creator, CPO2 Andrew Puttenham.

The dignitaries present at the ceremony included: Inspector Brian Miln, Winnipeg Police Services; Mr. Brian Hawkeye, President, Manitoba Division of The Navy League of Canada; Mr. Joh Reyes, MLA, Special Envoy for Military Affairs; and LCdr. Conor Lloyd and Maj. Stuart Smith, Regional Cadet Support Unit (Northwest). The Cadets leading the parade included: CPO1 Riley Howells, Parade; CPO1 Zander Wells, Guard; CPO2 Rheanne Millet, Colour Party; and PO1 Avery Walker, Band.

Sea Cadet Centennial Ceremony - Manitoba Legislature Grounds

The Sea Cadet Centennial Celebration Ceremony was developed by Cadets CPO1 Riley Howells, CPO1 Zander Wells, CPO2 Rheanne Millet and PO1 Avery Walker, under the guidance of Lt(N) Amanda Norquay, drill and ceremony and Sargent (Retired) Janine Brémault Bamford, music director. The event was emceed by LCdr(NL) André Sheppard.

The members of the Reviewing Party included: Major-General (Retired) Dennis C. Tabbernor, CMM, MSM, CD, Reviewing Officer; Mr. Brian Hawkeye, President, Manitoba Division of The Navy League of Canada; Honourable Robert-Falcon Ouellette, Member of Parliament, Winnipeg Centre; Mr. Joh Reyes, MLA, Special Envoy for Military Affairs; LCol Dallas West, Chief Training Officer & Deputy CO, Regional Cadet Support Unit (Northwest); and CPO2 Ken Lichty, J4 Material Control Supervisor, Regional Cadet Support Unit (Northwest).

During the ceremony, three Cadets, PO1 Igal Press, LS Kamryn Murray and PO1 Talia Krishka, were presented with the Bronze level of the Duke of Edinburgh Award by Mr. Isaac Anderson of The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award - Manitoba; the Manitoba Sea Cadet of the Year was presented by MGen Tabbernor to CPO1 Riley Howells; and as a thank you for being their Reviewing Officer, CPO2 Andrew Puttenham, on behalf of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets of Manitoba, presented MGen Tabbernor with a Ceremonial Paddle (Chief Puttenham was the paddle’s creator).

Dignitaries’ Reception - Fort Garry Hotel

After the Sea Cadet Centennial Celebration Ceremony, the dignitaries were invited to attend a reception in the LaVerendrye Room of the Fort Garry Hotel, where they were able to meet and ask questions of the four lead Cadets, the Corps Commanding Officers, and The Navy League of Canada Branch Presidents and Manitoba Division Executive.

At the reception, The Honourable Robert-Falcon Ouellette, MP presented the Sea Cadets with a letter from The Right Honourable Justin P. J. Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, congratulating them on 100 years of service to Canadian youth.

Sea Cadet Mess Dinner - HMCS Chippawa

The final event of the Centennial Celebration day was a formal Mess Dinner for the Sea Cadets, which was held on the parade deck of HMCS Chippawa. Volunteers from the eight Branches of The Navy League of Canada served the Cadets and their officers. At the Head Table (left to right in the first picture) were Lt(N) Kevin Daeninck, PO1 Avery Walker, CPO2 Rheanne Millet, CPO1 Riley Howells, President, Mr. Brian Hawkeye and CPO1 Zander Wells.
